What happened to Max in the Stranger Things 4 finale?

Max sacrificed himself in the Stranger Things 4 finale in order to save his friends and win the day. However, his death is still a mystery. Here’s what we know so far:

1. In the Stranger Things 4 finale, Max jumps into a portal that leads to the Upside Down. Upon emerging, he is shot in the head by a police officer, seemingly killing him instantly.

2. However, moments later, he is shown walking around and appearing to be conscious and alive. He then helps Hawkins and company escape the Upside Down and return to reality.

3. The final shot of the episode shows Max walking away from Hawkins while holding his dog – implying that he has returned to life. There has been no confirmation yet of whether or not Max will return in future seasons of Stranger Things.
