Career Confusion: How Did You Choose Your Path?
Great question, Faruk! Career confusion is completely normal - most of us have been there. Here's what helped me and what I've seen work for others:
Start with Self-Discovery:
- Take aptitude tests (like 16Personalities, StrengthsFinder) to understand your natural abilities
- Reflect on what activities make you lose track of time - those often point to your passions
- Consider your values: work-life balance, helping others, financial stability, creativity, etc.
Explore Before You Commit:
- Shadow professionals in fields that interest you
- Take online courses or attend workshops to test your interest
- Talk to people in different careers - LinkedIn is great for this
- Look for internships or part-time work in areas you're curious about
Practical Steps:
- Research job market trends and growth sectors
- Consider the education/training required vs. your resources
- Look at salary ranges and job availability in your area
- Think about whether you prefer stability or variety in work
My Personal Experience:
I initially wanted to be a doctor but realized through volunteering that I preferred the business side of healthcare. That led me to healthcare administration, which combined my interest in helping people with my organizational skills.
Remember: There's no "perfect" career, and it's okay to change direction. Many successful people had multiple career pivots. The key is to start somewhere and keep learning about yourself along the way.
What field are you most curious about right now? Happy to share more specific guidance!
